Pest Control

TRAPS

A large variety of traps are available for monitoring and trapping flying insects.

Sticky Traps

Sticky traps come in two types; wet stick and dry stick. Wet stick traps are useful for monitoring pest presence and also for mass trapping. Dry stick traps are useful for monitoring pest populations over a fixed time period and are sometimes easier to work with as they do not leave a sticky residue on fingers.

Most sticky traps come in two colours; yellow and blue. Yellow traps are generally used to trap sciarid flies, shore flies, aphids, whitefly, leafminers, and some thrips. Blue traps are generally used to trap thrips as the colour is more attractive to them.

Traps for monitoring carrot root fly are also available, they are stiff orange panels mounted on a pole and clip to place in the field (4 traps/ha is sufficient for monitoring purposes).

Trap types available:

Trap type Colours available
Small wet stick (10 x 25 cm) Yellow and blue
Large wet stick (20 x 40 cm) Yellow and blue
Large wet stick (25 x 40 cm) Yellow and blue
Small dry stick (10 x 25 cm) Yellow and blue
Biodegradable eco traps Yellow
Wet stick roller traps Yellow
Rigid orange field traps Orange

Pheromone Traps

The majority of pheromone traps are used for trapping and monitoring Lepidoptera (moths), delta traps are most commonly used for adult moths up to 25 mm in length; larger species are more easily trapped using funnel traps.

Delta/funnel traps contain lures which may be a pheromone to trap the male of the species, or an attractant to attract both the male and female.

Regular inspection and counting of trapped moths allows growers to make informed decisions on when best to apply pesticides or release natural predators and is an essential part of any Integrated Pest Management program.

Traps available: delta traps and funnel traps.
