Biopesticide for the control of Black Vine Weevil Based on a unique strain of the insect pathogenic nematode Steinernema kraussei. New low temperature formulation . Black Vine Weevils are one of the most serious insect pests of nursery stock and strawberries. Adult weevils feed at night, producing telltale notches around the edges of the leaves and flowers. However, the devastating crop losses are caused by the voracious root feeding larvae. There is often little indication that plants are being damaged until they are severely weakened or dying. This, coupled with the unpredictability of the pest, makes vine weevil control difficult Benefits of Nemasys L
How does Nemasys L work? Applications of Nemasys L to the soil contain nematodes in their vigorously infective stage. These aggressive organisms actively seek out the vine weevil larvae and enter them through natural body openings. Once inside the larvae, the nematodes release symbiotic bacteria, quickly killing the insect pest. The nematodes then reproduce inside the insect and release a new generation of infective juveniles, which disperse in search of further prey. Low temperature activity The nematodes in Nemasys L have the added advantage of being tolerant to low temperatures. Nemasys L will work at temperatures as low as 5 °C (41 °F), allowing application to be made whenever the pest is active. Formulation Each Nemasys L pack contains infective juvenile nematodes in a moist, inert carrier. When mixed with water, the nematodes readily form a suspension that is easily applied to the crop. Unopened packs may be stored in a refrigerator (do not freeze) up to the expiration date printed on each pack. Application timings For optimum results, apply Nemasys L when Black Vine Weevil larvae are present. Nemasys L should be applied to moist soil, if soil conditions are not ideal then apply a spray of pure water after Nemasys L application to wash the nematodes into the soil and also off any foliage. Spring applications (March to May) should be used to clean up at the time plant damage has been experienced, ensuring to apply Nemasys L before the larvae pupate. To control the pest before damage occurs, target the younger larval stages by applying Nemasys L during late summer and autumn (August to November).
