Since 2003 Plant Solutions has been bringing the best in alternative technology products direct to farmers and growers in the horticultural and agricultural industries. Plant Solutions specialises in sourcing novel products for plant health, pest and disease control, soil health, and organic systems. The majority of our product range features natural plant extracts or naturally occurring organisms such as bacteria, nematodes and natural insect predators. Why the Need for Alternative Technologies? The Plant Protection Products Directive (91/414/EEC) came into force on 26 July 1993 and prompted the review of all plant protection products (pesticides) in the EU. As a result of this review process a number of pesticides have been withdrawn from use, leading to gaps in the pest and disease control armoury for certain crops. It also created a desire in farmers and growers to find alternatives to pesticides to keep crops healthy and to reduce pest and disease. Pesticide resistance is becoming more and more of an issue, with new active ingredients slow to come to market, making the choice of pesticides on certain crops very limited. Biopesticides based on natural extracts or with physical modes of action are less likely to suffer from pest resistance and when integrated into conventional pest and disease control programmes can prolong the life of other active ingredients. Consumer fears over pesticide residues have increased dramatically over the last few years, with many now demanding ‘residue free’ produce. This has had a knock-on effect for growers whose own customers (often the major multiples) are increasingly restricting the pesticides they will allow to be used on their products, and are pushing towards zero residues across the board. Naturally derived products tend not to leave residues and often have very short, or zero day harvest intervals, making it easier for growers to produce healthy, clean and residue free crops. Company Information Plant Solutions is a division of Tozer Seeds Ltd. and benefits from 70 years of experience in the vegetable industry.
